Basil supports World Bicycle Relief with €3.109,14
Every year, Basil designs and sells a special charity bag for World Bicycle Relief (WBR). WBR is an organisation that gives people across the world a better life through the use of bicycles. Basil is behind the WBR in this respect. Cycling can really make a difference.
Spread the cycling joy! That’s the motto of bicycle accessory specialist Basil. Basil has one goal in mind when making panniers, bicycle baskets, crates and bicycle accessories: to provide people with a happy ride. Cycling contributes to our well-being and promotes better overall health. Every year, Basil designs a bag for an organisation that helps people around the world by using bicycles: World Bicycle Relief.
Cycling makes a difference
‘When Basil was asked a few years ago to support World Bicycle Relief, I was immediately enthusiastic,’ says Marthijn van Balveren, owner of Basil. ‘For us it is very common to take a quick bike ride. In other countries, people often have to walk for hours, with all of the consequences that entails. Children cannot go to school, people die because help arrives too late, and food spoils because it cannot be transported on time. In short, a lack of bicycles has enormous consequences for education, healthcare and the economy. Cycling can really make a difference and change people’s lives for the better. Basil makes a great contribution to this.’
Collector’s Item
This year, Basil designed a sturdy shoulder bag made from jeans denim fabric with an adjustable shoulder strap. The WBR bag was put on sale at Eurobike in Friedrichshafen, Europe’s premier bicycle fair. Marketing coordinator Jossie Hunting says: ‘Many people came to our stand specifically for the bag. The WBR bag is now a collector’s item, a real must-have.’
Revenues
The proceeds of the sale of the WBR bag now stand at €3,109.14. Managing Director of World Bicycle Relief, Kristina Jaslunalte says: ‘This is a wonderful sum from Basil. This contribution will give more than 20 people in Africa their own bicycle. This has a great deal of positive impact. People can study with a bicycle, maintain a job, visit the hospital and more. Together, we make a real difference with bicycles.’
World Bicycle Relief World Bicycle Relief was founded in 2005 after the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami of December the previous year. The mission of World Bicycle Relief is to provide people with opportunities for independence and livelihoods by means of a bicycle.
Because distances can be bridged faster, children can go to school, while patients can receive care sooner. Today, the organisation is represented in no less than 13 African countries, the Philippines, Indonesia and Columbia and has supplied almost 370,000 bicycles. In addition, WBR also offers training to technicians on site to guarantee maintenance for long-lasting use. The robust Buffalo-Bike is being assembled in four African countries, with a special design that can accommodate extreme loads. The Buffalo-Bike is designed to carry heavy loads across longer distances and is suitable for difficult terrain like poorly maintained dirt roads.
